Troubleshooting: Pressure Washer is Leaking

July 27, 2022

Oil leaking from the engine. First check the drain plug or oil dipstick on the engine. Many times, leaks are traced to these areas. Tighten the drain plug if it is the source. As with any oil leak in the engine, once the problem has been corrected, verify the oil level per the manufactures owner’s manual. If the oil dipstick is leaking, remove to verify the O-ring is intact (if applicable) and remove any foreign debris. Verify the oil level then hand tighten the oil fill dipstick.

If the above are not the sources of the leak, look at the body of the engine. Seams where engine components are bolted together have seals that can fail. If you should find oil leaking in these areas, you will need to contact the engine manufacturer to find where your nearest service center is located.

Water leaking. Start at the pump where you connect your garden hose. Is that the source of your leak? If it is, you may need to grease the gasket with white lithium grease or replace if damaged.

Next check the high pressure side. Any leaking may be fixed by tightening the connectors while the water and pressure washer are turned off and the pressure has been bled by pulling the trigger. Also check the o-rings; grease or replace if damaged. If water continues to leak, or if the water is leaking from the hose or its connectors, immediately discontinue use of the hose and dispose of it properly. Never repair a high pressure hose! Replace it with a new hose of the same or higher pressure rating.
